Political Party
The Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) is a longstanding political party in Grenada. It was founded in 1950 by Eric Gairy, initially as the Grenada People's Party, and is historically associated with the labour movement and Gairy's political leadership. GULP was a major political force during Grenada's colonial period. It won the first elections under universal suffrage in 1951, taking 6 of the 8 seats, and later returned to government in 1961 and 1967. It won 13 of 15 seats in the 1972 election under Gairy. Gairy's government and GULP were removed from power in 1979, when the New Jewel Movement led by Maurice Bishop took control. Political parties were subsequently prohibited during the revolutionary period. After the 1983 U.S.-led intervention, GULP was again able to participate in elections. Since the restoration of parliamentary politics, GULP has not returned to government and has had limited electoral representation. It last won a parliamentary seat in 1995; it received no seats in the 1999 election and subsequent elections listed in available historical records. The party has been undergoing an effort to rebuild and revitalize the movement. Its current leader, Geoffrey Preudhomme, describes himself as returning to Grenada to take up the leadership of GULP and rebuild the party.
